Title: Metropolis

Assemblage with found objects

I created Metropolis a long time ago, and it remains one of my favorite pieces. When I first saw the box where it was crafted, it immediately resembled a skyline, and from there I thought of Fritz Lang’s film, which I watched during my college years.

It was one of my first assemblages, and I wasn’t sure if I could take on the task of telling the story of Metropolis.
Although I was very happy with the results, there were some technical issues I needed to fix. I was still at the beginning of my journey as an assemblage artist and made a few mistakes.

So recently I’ve replaced all the screws, reinforced the structure, and rebuilt the small elements that needed repair. It had to be done.
Now, when I look at it, I feel it is finally right.
I believe we have to honor what we create; otherwise, it always finds its way back to us in one way or another.

About the movie: Metropolis is a 1927 expressionist science-fiction silent film directed by Fritz Lang. It is regarded as a pioneering work in the history of science fiction cinema. Made in Germany, it is set in a futuristic urban dystopia. Filming began in 1925, and at the time it was the most expensive film ever produced.

Movie plot: In the future, wealthy industrialists rule the vast city of Metropolis from high-rise towers, while a lower class of underground workers—often treated as “minions”—labors constantly to operate the machines that power the city. Based on that, I created this artwork where Metropolis becomes a building, a city, a state.
